Pedro Ornelas of Aledo, Texas, and Rouge Blues marked 220.5 to win the $2,000 Limited Rider finals at the 6666 Ranch NCHA Western National Championships in Reno, Nevada, Tuesday. Rouge Blues is owned by Connie and Richard Bertel of Fort Worth, Texas. He came into the finals after posting a 217.5, the second highest score in the go-round.
Bred by Jan Newman of Rosedale, Louisiana, Rouge Blues is by Peptoboonsmal out of Lena Crocker, by Smart Little Lena. His siblings have earned over $130,000, and the 5-year-old brought earnings of nearly $28,000 to the Western Nationals. He was an NCHA Futurity and Super Stakes semi-finalst and Super Stakes Open Ltd reserve champion under Tim McCloud.
Ornelas also split ninth place on Rouge Blues in the $10,000 Novice finals. Altogether, the pair earned about $6,800 at Reno.
Alan Oglesby of Napa, California, was the $2,000 Limited Rider reserve champion riding Barbara Poundstone’s Boons Magic Cat.
Boons Magic Cat was bred by Blackjack Family Ranch, and is a 7-year-old by A Hocus Pocus Cat out of Boon Town Gal, by Boon Bar.
Oglesby finished third in the NCHA World Standings in 2011 in the $2,000 Limited Rider class.
