It was a bang up 223-point win for SL Jaybird on July 4th, at the Battle in the Saddle Mecuria NCHA World Series in Oklahoma City.
Shown by R.L. Chartier, who owns the 10-year-old gelding in partnership with his wife Mica, SL Jaybird had scored 223.5 points to qualify for the 7-horse finals, where he drew last to work and earned $10,860 for his win.
“Two of the cows I liked all along were left and it all worked,” said Chartier. “This horse draws (back) and needs a lot of cow, so my main goal was to get way up.”
Reys Desire, ridden by Lee Francois for Woody Bartlett, earned $8,578 as reserve champion, with 222 points.
SL Jaybird and Chartier won the AQHA Senior Cutting, as well, and Chartier also won the Mecuria $10,000 Novice finals and $4,697 on A Little Bossy, owned by Wrigley Ranches.
SL Jaybird, by Smart Little Jerry, has earned over $380,000. He was shown as a top finalist by Winston Hansma in open limited age competition, and by Mica Chartier, who won seven non-pro limited age events riding him. He also placed second in the 2011 NCHA Open World Finals with R.L. Chartier.
“There are some horses that enjoy (showing), but very few that crave it. And he’s one that does,” said Mica Chartier, whose wins on SL Jaybird inlcuded the 2008 NCHA Super Stakes Non-Pro Classic. “He loves to cut.”
