Tes Van Houten of Strathmore, Alberta, marked 220 on Swimmin Dual to lead the first round of the $35,000 Non-Pro division at the 6666 Ranch NCHA Western National Championships Wednesday.
In all, 23 contestants marked 210 or better to advance to Thursday’s finals.
Bred by Paul and Julie Hansma, Swimmin Dual is an 8-year-old son of Kit Dual out of Swimmin Poo, from the family of NCHA Horse of the Year Hicapoo.
Swimmin Dual won the 2007 Brazos Bash Non-Pro 3-year-old title with Matt Miller and has earned more than $70,000. Van Houten was a $15,000 Amateur finalist on him at last year’s Western Nationals, and Rex Rossoll was a finalist on him in this week’s $10,000 Novice.
Holly Jones posted the second highest $35,000 Non-Pro qualifying score, a 219 on BNL Lucky Duck, an 8-year-old daughter of Blue Duck Okie.
Thursday’s finalists will include the $3,000 Novice champion Zack And Blue, ridden by Parri Longworth. Al Dunning rode the Mecom Blue gelding for his Novice title.
