Hall of Fame rider Russ Westfall and Peptos Opus Cat marked 223 Monday to lead the Open go-round at the 6666 Ranch NCHA Western National Championships in Reno, Nevada. They set the bar competing last in the day’s second set of cattle.
Fifteen horses marked 214.5 or better to advance to Tuesday’s $20,000-added finals.
Bred by Wagonhound Land & Livestcok, Peptos Opus Cat is a 6-year-old mare by Peptoboonsmal out of NCHA Futurity finalist Opus Cat, by High Brow Cat.
Peptos Opus Cat is owned by David and Lisa Anderson of Calgary. She won the 5/6-year-old finals at the Pacific Coast Derby this spring, and has earned more than $54,000.
Don Pooley posted the second highest score in the go-round with a 221 on Marcy Blanchard’s Hickorys Indian Macy, by Hickorys Indian Pep. Blanchard won the Non-Pro title at last year’s Eastern National Championships on the mare.
