Darren Blanton of Dallas, Texas, leads the Non-Pro division of the XTO Energy NCHA Super Stakes after Wednesday’s second round. Blanton’s 217 on Short N Smooth, along with his first-round score of 218, gave him a 435 cumulative score. In all, 57 riders marked 425.5 or better to qualify for Thursday’s Non-Pro semi-finals.
Bred by Ronald Edward Shelton, Short N Smooth is a gelding by Smooth As A Cat out of Southern Futurity champion Playin Shorty, by Playin Stylish. He had earned $31,000 on his way to the Super Stakes.
Trainer Paul Hansma had the second high score of 439 on Short N Smooth in the Open division, behind Boyd Rice’s 443 on CR Sun Reys, by Dual Rey. Short N Smooth was scratched from Tuesday’s Gelding Stakes finals, but is also qualified for Thursday’s Non-Pro Gelding finals with Blanton.
