PG Serenade and James Payne scored 225 points on Friday for a $13,000 win at the West Texas Futurity in Amarillo. The gray daughter of Playgun belongs to Donald Duke from Great Britain. Smooth Tootin Cat, shown by Casey Green for Amy Roberts, was reserve champion with 222 points.
Payne purchased PG Serenade last fall, from her breeders and Payne’s former employers, Dick and Brenda Pieper, who own Playgun and stand him at their breeding and training facility in Marietta, Okla.
It was another Playgun daughter, Miss Bay Gun, who gave Payne, then 24, his first limited age event win, in the 2002 Heartland Futurity.
Payne also placed fifth with 216.5 points in the West Texas Futurity aboard Boss Creeks Tico, owned by Darryl and Pam Humphrey.
