In a precautionary move to ensure the health and safety of horses, the Breeder’s Invitational board of directors has cancelled their Breeder’s Invitational cutting event in Tulsa, Okla., from May 14-28, and the National Cutting Horse Association has also cancelled the Mercuria World Series of Cutting this weekend in Tulsa.
The decision was made on Saturday evening, May 14, and was based on confirmed cases of equine herpes virus (EVH-1) in two horses that had competed at the NCHA Western National Championships, in Ogden, Utah, from April 29 through May 8.
While none of the horses in Tulsa for the Breeder’s Invitational or the NCHA World Series of Cutting have exhibited clinical signs of EHV-1, the governing bodies of the events made the decision to cancel the shows, in order to ensure the maximum health and safety of the entrants.
A draft of a press release from the Colorado Department of Agriculture on the reported EHV cases can be viewed by clicking here.
