Uncle Mo, undefeated 2-year-old Eclipse champion and early favorite for the Kentucky Derby, makes his 3-year-old debut on Saturday, in the Timely Writer Stakes at Gulfstream Park. His last race was the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Churchill Downs on November 6, which he won by 4 1/4 lengths.
Owner Mike Repole purchased the Indian Charlie colt for $220,000 at the Keeneland Yearling Sale and put him in the hands of Eclipse Award-winning trainer Todd Pletcher, who celebrated his first Kentucky Derby victory in 2010 with Super Saver.
Also on Saturday, Pletcher-trained Brethren, a half-brother to Super Saver bred and owned by WinStar Farm, goes to post in the Tampa Bay Derby. The Distorted Humor son, undefeated in three starts, came into focus as a possible Derby contender after his 4-length victory in the Sam Davis Stakes, at Tampa Bay on February 12.
Last Saturday at Aqueduct, Repole and Pletcher sent out Stay Thirsty, by Bernardini, to win the Gotham Stakes and make another claim among early Derby favorites.
