One Time Royalty, recent winner of $250,000, as the NCHA Futurity champion, and Jazzys Pep Talk, high-selling lot at $215,000 during the NCHA Futurity Sales, share an unusual kink in the taproot of their pedigrees.
Jazmau, the fifth dam of One Time Royalty and the third dam of Jazzys Pep Talk, is the fiber that connects the pedigrees of cutting champions such as Jazabell Quixote, Jazzote, Jazzy Socks, Royal Jazzy, Son Ofa Doc, July Jazz, Hickoryote, Smart Lil Jazalena, Jazzy Joe Lena, MH Bodees Starlena, Credible Cat and Atta Cat, among many others.
Royal Jazabell, second dam of Jazzys Pep Talk, is a Jazmau daughter. She is also the dam of Bill’s Jazabell, the third dam of One Time Royalty.
The kink comes from Maurzy, Jazmau’s dam. Maurzy, foaled in 1944, was sired by Band Time TB, also sire of the first NCHA world champion, Benny Binion’s Gelding, who held the title from 1946 through 1948.
Band Time was by High Time, by Ultimus. Kentucky-bred Ultimus was by Commando, by James R. Keene’s legendary sire, Domino.
High Time, foaled in 1916 and racing’s leading sire in 1929, was intensely inbred, as Ultimus was by a son of Domino out of a daughter of Domino, and High Time’s dam was also a Domino daughter.
In addition to Ultimus, High Time also sired Luke McLuke, winner of the 1914 Belmont Stakes. It was Luke McLuke’s daughter, Myrtle Dee, who produced Three Bars, the Thoroughbred who, more than any other, stamped his indelible image on the modern Quarter Horse.
In addition, Percentage, Three Bars’ sire, was out of Gossip Avenue, whose paternal grandsire was Disguise, by Domino (One Time Royalty and Jazzys Pep Talk, like all the best modern cutting performers, also carry the blood of Three Bars).
Nellene, the dam of Joe Reed II, an important Quarter Horse sire – and sire of the equally influential stallion Leo – was also an Ultimus granddaughter through her sire, Fleeting Time; and Possible, the dam of Kentucky Derby winner Bold Venture (sire of Depth Charge, the famous progenitor of Quarter Horse runners), was also out of an Ultimus daughter.
