“We wanted something creative when we named him, but then I thought, what if he’s not good?” said Colleen Wold, who scored 219 points Tuesday to win the NCHA Futurity Matthews Cutting Horses Non-Pro Limited on homegrown Ka Blue E, by Mecom Blue.
Teresa Padgett marked 217 points on Boonlight Fishin to claim reserve.
“He turned it on tonight,” said Wold of Ka Blue E, started and trained by her boyfriend, Ben Johnson, with an assist in the last six weeks before the Futurity, by two-time Open Futurity champion Kathy Daughn.
“Kathy took him to the pre-works for us and was a major asset,” said Wold, who was showing in an NCHA Futurity finals event for the first time.
Teresa Padgett drew up four slots following Wold in the working order.
“We just wanted to cut safe, but be aggressive,” said Padgett, who raised Boonlight Fishin out of a the horse that she showed as ACHA World Champion in the $10,000 Novice Non-Pro class.
“I like that he’s strong and has a big stop,” said Padgett, who trained Boonlight Fishin herself, with some assistance from James Payne. “He’s probably the most trained horse I’ve ever brought here.
