World-record holder Fast Prize Zoom raced to her third win from three starts, on Thursday afternoon at Ruidoso Downs, while setting the fastest-qualifying time of :19.499 in the trials to the Grade 1, $625,000 Rainbow Futurity. Two-year-olds with the 10-fastest times from 14 trials qualified for the 400-yard Rainbow Futurity, the second leg of the Quarter Horse Triple Crown, to be held on July 20.
Wes Giles-trained Fast Prize Zoom was making her first start since winning the first leg of the Triple Crown, the Grade 1, $300,000 West Texas Futurity on April 20. She easily won the ninth trial by a length and a quarter with all-time leading rider G.R. Carter in the irons.
“When I warmed her up, she acted a little fresh on the backstretch and then in the gate,” Carter said. “But she settled down and broke well. She’s one of those horses who’s faster than she looks when she’s running.” Carter also rode second-fastest qualifier Stolis Winner, fifth-fastest qualifier Ravin Corona, and sixth-fastest qualifier Dashazoom.
Owned by Weetona Stanley and William Smith, Fast Prize Zoom set world records in her two previous starts, the West Texas Futurity trials and finals. In her career debut she set the 300-yard world record of :14.870 with a negligible tail wind. The Shazoom filly then lowered that record to :14.678, when she won the West Texas Futurity by a half-length with a brisk tail wind.
Giles freshened the filly after the West Texas win to focus on the Rainbow and All American Futurities. “We didn’t push her very hard [in training],” he said. “I’m really pleased with her time since she wasn’t tuned up for this race.”
Heritage Place Futurity winner Stolis Winner raced to the second-fastest qualifying time of :19.563 for trainer Heath Taylor. The son of Stoli powered to his fourth win from five career starts, in his first appearance since his 25-1 upset win in the Grade 1, $1 million Heritage Place Futurity on June 1.
“He’s only been here at Ruidoso for three weeks and we only breezed him once,” Taylor noted. “After being hauled and the stress of the Heritage Place Futurity, he ran an exceptional race.”
R.D. and Shaun Hubbard’s PB And Crackers led four qualifiers into the Rainbow Futurity from the stable of six-time national training champion Paul Jones. Jones also qualified Winners Version, Spring Bling and Inseperable.
PB And Crackers, a gelding that Jones says looks like his sire, The Down Side, drew out to a length win with the third-fastest time of :19.579. He was one of two horses qualified for Jones by jockey Freddie Martinez. Martinez was also aboard 10th-fastest qualifier Inseperable.
PB And Crackers, a late-running gelding that scored his first win in the Ruidoso Juvenile, is a New Mexico-bred. “We have the Rainbow and All American dreams with him,” said Jones. “The Down Side was a quality horse and 440 yards was right up his alley.” The Down Side won the Grade 1 Champion Of Champions for Jones at Los Alamitos in 2003 while racing the 440-yards in :21.19.
