Scott Weis has earned three open championship titles and a reserve so far at the Wine Country Cutting Horse Spectacular in Paso Robles, California. The seven-day event concludes on Monday, September 25.
Riding Hick Chicaroo, by Doc’s Hickory, for Latigo Canyon Ranch, Weis scored 223 points to win the Open Derby over Ricochet Rascal and Andrew Coates with 220.5 points. Weis also took the $10,000 Open Derby finals with 222 on Little Dirty Dancer for Suzanne Rodoni-Silverberg; tied himself with 222 points on Open Gelding Futurity co-champions Dasons Dual Dreams and Master Tangy Peppy, owned by Jimmy Kemp and Dicki Lavine, respectively; and won the first go-round of the Open Futurity with 218 points on Baleena Car for Ron Malone.
Andrew Coates rides Ricochet Rascal for Jon Winkelried, co-chairman of Goldman Sachs. The Paint gelding by Smart Little Ricochet also claimed the Open Gelding Derby title with 222 points, and Coates won the Open Gelding Classic championship with 222 on Spinnie Da Pooh, owned by NFL legend Joe Montana. Spinnie Da Pooh, by the Australian sire Docs Spinifex, was also placed fourth with 216 in the Open Classic.
Fancy Frostina, a Smart Little Lena daughter ridden by Tim Smith for Tommy Manion, won the Open Classic with 222, following go-round scores of 220 and 218. Matt Sargood claimed reserve and third in the Classic aboard High Brow Sallycat (220.5) and SR Ruff Choice (217).
Sargood also nabbed reserve and third in the Open Gelding Classic riding Rey Lano and Stylish Tango, and was a finalist in the Open Derby on Justa Smart Swinger, and in the $10,000 open Derby on Short Pepsi Lena.
After two go-rounds of Open Futurity competition, Russ Westfall ranks first among finalists with 434 points on Royal Pandalena, owned by Tag Chapman, Los Olivos, California. Russ’ wife, Janet, ranked first and second among Non-Pro first go-round contenders with 220 points on Royal Boondust and 218 on Royal Holly Brown.
Royal Pandalena, Royal Boondust and Royal Holly Brown are all sired by the Westfall’s stallion CD Royal.
