Drosselmeyer, a 13-1 longshot, won the 2010 Belmont Stakes by three-quarters of a length over Fly Down, at 5-1. Race favorite Ice Box, never a threat, finished ninth in the 12-horse field.
It was the second Belmont win for Eclipse Award-winning trainer Bill Mott and the first Belmont victory for Mike Smith, who is second only to Jerry Bailey in Breeders Cup wins (13 to 15).
Kentucky-based, but Texas-owned, WinStar Farm, Drosselmeyer’s owner, claimed its first Triple Crown race victory with Super Saver in this year’s Kentucky Derby. Following his eighth-place finish in the Preakness, however, WinStar decided against entering Super Saver in the Belmont.
Drosselmeyer, the career winner of two out of eight races prior the Belmont, had tough trips in his two previous starts – the G2 Dwyer Stakes and the G2 Louisiana Derby – but still finished second and third, respectively. The Belmont was his first stakes victory.
“I was just happy we got a nice, clean trip,” said Mott, who replaced Drosselmeyer’s regular rider Kent Desormeaux with Smith in the Belmont. Smith, 45, a two-time Eclipse Award winner, has piloted super mare Zenyatta for 13 of her 16 perfect starts; he also won the 2005 Kentucky Derby on 50-1 shot Giacomo.
Mott saddled 1998 Belmont winner Victory gallop for former trainer Elliot Walden, when Walden was recuperating from a broken leg. Walden is now vice president and racing manager for WinStar Farm.
This is the third time WinStar Farm owners Bill Casner and Kenny Trout, of Dallas, Texas, have had a horse in the Belmont. They finished second in 2006 with Bluegrass Cat and ninth in 2009 with Mr. Hot Stuff.
Drosselmeyer, a $600,000 yearling purchase, is by Distorted Humor, who stands at WinStar, in Versialles, KY, for a fee of $100,000.
