Hickorys Fancy Pepto, ridden by Lloyd Cox (pictured), captured her second championship title in as many months with a 219-point win in the South Point $50,000-added Futurity, on Sunday, October 14 in Las Vegas, NV. The 3-year-old daughter of Pepto Doc Quixote, owned by Lloyd Cox’s cousin, Matthew Cox, also placed eighth in the $25,000-added division, where Missin Starlena, under Shad Platt for Sammy Nevis, was the winner with 222 points.
Cox also rode Catastrophic Playboy, owned by Phillip and Vicki Nivens, as reserve champion of the $25,000-added Futurity, as well as champion of both the $50,000 and $25,000-added Open Gelding divisions, and sixth-placed in the $50,000-added Finals. The Colorado-based trainer claimed $53,714 in the open divisions of the show – more than any other rider.
Faith In My Cat was a decisive winner in the South Point Derby with 226 points; reserve champion Hissy Cat, ridden by Darren Simpkins for Jeff and Jennifer Foland, scored 220.5. Four-year-old Faith In My Cat, ridden by Clint Allen for Wrigley Ranches, also earned money as Open Gelding champion. Both Faith In My Cat and Hissy Cat are sired by High Brow Cat.
Clint Allen also split third and fourth riding NCHA Futurity Open reserve champion Hydrive Cat for David Plummer; and was sixth and eleventh, respectively, on Wood I Never and CD Graceful Dual, both owned by Wrigley Ranches. His mounts claimed $43,350 or 43 percent of the total purse in the Open Derby Finals.
Six-year-old Quintan Blue, ranked among NCHA’s top ten all-time leading money earners with nearly $600,000, scored 227 points to win the Classic/Challenge under Roger Wagner for Marvine Ranch. Wagner also split fifth and sixth riding Pet Squirrel for Jim Vangilder and finished eleventh on Absolutely Stunning for Tommy Manion and Karen Freeman. With a total of $48,269, Wagner ranked second among money earners in the South Point open divisions.
