Illegal Memories topped 125 two-year-old trial contenders on Saturday, October 13 at Lone Star Park, for the $432,090 Grade 1 Dash For Cash Futurity. Trained by Doug McMullen for Tim Lange and Charlie Forbes, the Texas-bred son of Illegal Runaway (pictured) ran 400 yards in :19.889, under Roy Baldillez .

Illegal Memories will enter the October 27 final with two wins and $80,372 in six career starts. In three of those starts, including Saturday’s impressive one-length trial victory, he has jumped the photo finish light beam at the wire. He did the same while finishing fourth in the Grade 1 Retama Park Futurity in June. In the trial for that race, he nearly sent two-time reigning Lone Star Park riding champion “Diamond” Jim Brooks into retirement. The 56-year-old jockey was sidelined four months with an injured rotator cuff, when the gelding bobbled badly while finishing second and Brooks was propelled out of the irons.

“At the wire, he got stiff-legged and just propped and dug his two front feet into the ground,” Brooks said. “He tossed me out of the stirrups and into the air with no reins in my hands and I came down hard. He’s got some talent, though.”

In addition to Illegal Memories, who won the fifth trial, the finalists are Coronas Fast Dash , ridden by Juan Vazquez and trained by John Buchanan; Adios My Amigos, Roy

Brooks/Luis Villafranco; Passion Raging On, Larry Payne/Eddie Willis; Presidential Request, G.R.
