Exclusive: Official results of the Rock Creek Ranch Dispersal, October 16, 2009
The sun came out in north Texas for the first time in weeks, on Friday, October 16, and brightened the outlook for the cutting horse market leading into the NCHA Futurity Sales. The Rock Creek Dispersal, held on October 16 in Weatherford, Texas, sold 61 horses for $3,237,600, with an average of $53,075.
Pet Squirrel, the high seller at $400,000, was one of six current show horses that sold for $1,013,000 ($168,833 average). The 7-year-old daughter of Playdox, with ET’s for 2010 by High Brow Cat and Chula Dual, was purchased by Mary Jo Goertz, Hamilton, TX.
“Mares were extremely strong,” said Western Bloodstock’s Jim Ware, who noted that nine mares (including current show horses) that were in foal, with ET’s, or proven producers averaged $150,555. Other high-selling mares included Poosmal, the high-selling broodmare at $235,000, to Floyd Miller, Bayfield, CO; Asscher Cat at $235,000 to Sherra Kapfhammer, Louisville, KY; and Dual N At Noon at $190,000 to Larry Stokes, Longview, TX.
The six 3-year-olds, all paid to date for the NCHA Futurity and trained by Roger Wagner, sold for $671,000, with an average of $111,833. These included Dualin Blue, by Dualin Jewels out of Quintan Blue, the high seller at $205,000, who went to Larry Stokes. Arosesuchaclatter, by Smooth As A Cat, brought $200,000 from Carlos Dasilva, Stephenville, TX, and Sugar Lights, by CD Lights, went for $100,000 to Reagan Lancaster, Plano, TX
The 12 head of 2-year-olds averaged $57,208 for a total of $686,500. Blue One Time was the high seller at $245,000. The One Time Pepto son went to J.E. Jumonville, Ventress, LA. Cat Man Blue, by High Brow Cat, sold for $210,000 to J.C. Mitchell, Forney, TX, while Dualin Squirrel, by Chula Dual, brought $85,000 from Carlos Dasilva. Blue One Time and Cat Man Blue are both out of Quintan Blue; Dualin Squirrel is out of Pet Squirrel.
Yearlings and weanlings averaged $15,000 on 29 head, but more significantly, according to Ware, the seven yearlings and weanlings sired by cutting’s “Big 3 stallions, High Brow Cat, Dual Rey and Peptoboonsmal,” averaged $35,930. The top lots from this group included high seller Cat Got Squirrel, a weanling filly by High Brow Cat, who sold to Darren Blanton, Dallas, TX, for $55,000; Sheza Cats Pet, a yearling filly by High Brow Cat, who sold for $50,000 to David Sabey, Bellevue, WA; and Cats At The Mall, a weanling filly by High Brow Cat, who sold for $40,000 to Alice Walton, Millsap, TX.
