On May 26, using National Cutting Horse Association Futurity Open champions as a gauge, I found that 34 percent of the 44 champions were first foals and that 50 percent of the champions were either first or second foals, with their dams having produced a total of 528 foals or an average of 12.
Intrigued by the results, I decided to investigate the birth order of the 48 winners of the All American Futurity, Quarter Horse racing’s richest event. Only 15 percent of All American Futurity winners were first foals, but 37 percent were first or second foals, and 65 percent were either first, second or third foals of their dams. The 48 dams produced a total of 486 foals or an average of 10. Three of the 48 mares were Thoroughbreds, but their TB offspring were taken into account for the tally.
