Shawn Ogni, Angier, N.C., scored 219 points on NRR Petal Cat, by Instant Starlights, to win $5,566 as Amateur champion of 2020 Southern Derby in Jackson, Miss., on October 31,
Marcos Chocron-Arocha, Doral, Fla., riding Looks Like Foxie, by Dual Smart Rey, and Deb Herold, West Point, Iowa, on Texas Tuxxedo, by Once In A Blu Boon, tied with 216 points to share the reserve championship and each collect $4,150.
Shawn Ogni, the NCHA earner of $109,111, also made the 2020 Southern Derby finals in the Amateur Intermediate and Non-Pro Ltd on NRR Petal Cat, and won the Southern Classic in 2014 with Spoons Lil Buckaroo LTE $131,881.
Bred by North Ridge Ranch, NRR Petal Cat LTE $47,847 is the first money earner out of NRR Holy Cat LTE $1,180, by High Brow Cat. NRR Petal Cat was also an Open finalist with Tracy Barton at the 2020 Augusta Futurity.
Marcos Chocron-Arocha, the NCHA earner of $14,208, also showed Looks Like Foxie as reserve champion in the 2020 Southern Futurity’s Intermediate Amateur, and placed third in the Limited Amateur.
Looks Like Foxie LTE $26,065, bred by Glade Knight, Weatherford, Tex., is out of Foxie Cat LTE $72,034, by That Sly Cat. Foxie Cat was a 2016 Open finalist at the NCHA Classic Challenge and seven other major events with John Mitchell. Looks Like Foxie, who won the 4-year-old West Texas Futurity Amateur Limited for Chocron-Arocha in August, is Foxie Cat’s first money earner.
Deb Herold, the NCHA earner of $235,665, won Amateur Derby championships with Wiley Cat in 2011 at the NCHA Derby, Arbuckle Mountain and Tunica.
Texas Tuxxedo LTE $75,092 was bred by Troy Stewart out of Lil Puma LTE $54,403, the dam of two earners of $113,336, including Little Puma LTE $38,244. Texas Tuxxedo was an Open finalist with R.L. Chartier at the 2020 NCHA Derby and Brazos Bash, and won the 2020 West Texas Derby Amateur Intermediate with Deb Herold, as well.
