Chris Hanson won his third consecutive Waco Texas Classic Open championship during the Waco Texas Futurity, which wrapped up its 2019 edition on Sunday. Showing Mamas Stylish Sophie, by Dual Rey, Hanson scored 223 points, as the first rider in the 10-horse finals. Five draws later, he showed Metallic Stardust, by Metallic Cat, to score 222 points for reserve.
Mamas Stylish Sophie LTE $106,513 is owned by German Lugo, Gainesville, Texas, who showed the 5-year-old mare earlier this year to place third in the NCHA Super Stakes Classic Amateur Unlimited. Metallic Stardust LTE $45,724, is owned by Billy Foster, El Dorado, Ark., who showed her as an Open Limited finalist in the 2019 Non-Pro Cutting 5/6 Classic.
In 2018, Hanson claimed the Waco Texas Classic’s top three places, with a 226-point championship win on Hes A Smart Guy, sired by My Guy Rey and owned by Charles Burger; 225 points for reserve aboard Too Hot To Copy, by Metallic Cat; and 218.5 to tie for third with Dual Glen Rey, by Dual Rey. In 2017, he won the Classic riding Fancy Rey, owned by Charles Burger, and placed third with Too Hot To Copy, owned by Nachos Cutting Horses.
Hanson also showed Code Belue, sired by Cat Belue and owned by Ali Good, Ringling, Okla., to tie with 220 points for reserve in the 2019 Waco Texas Open Derby. SJR Kit D Vine, sired by Kit Kat Sugar and owned by Justin White, Chappell Hill, Tex., won the Derby, as the Derby Limited and Gelding divisions, with 221 points. Sippin On Suds, sired by High Brow CD, and shown by Boyd Rice for Sarco Creek Ranch, Victoria, Tex., scored 220 points as co-reserve champion.
