Jessica Pounds of Lipan, Texas, and Hope Mitchell of Weatherford, Texas, shared Monday’s high score of 216.5 as the first round of Non-Pro competition continued at the Jerry’s Chevrolet NCHA Futurity, presented by Great American Insurance in Fort Worth.
Sarah Morine and Georgy On My Mind retained the overall lead with a 218.5 from Saturday.
Pounds rode Farmer Brown, a gelding bred by David and Stacie McDavid by Smart Mate out of Quixotes Pretty Lady, by Doc Quixote. In the early 1990s, Sandy Bonelli made both the Open and Non-Pro finals of the NCHA Futurity on Quixotes Pretty Lady, and went on to place third in the Non-Pro Super Stakes and win the Non-Pro NCHA Derby on the mare. Quixotes Pretty Lady has produced earners of $156,000.
Pounds, who made the NCHA Futurity finals with Reys Dreamgirl in 2009, won the Non-Pro Novice division of the Breeders Invitational with Brown Bear earlier this year.
Mitchell rode Smooth Movin Marie, a mare bred by Isbell Charolais by Smooth As A Cat out of Smart Marie, by Smart Little Lena. Smart Marie’s siblings have earned more than $552,000.
Mitchell, an NCHA Non-Pro Hall of Fame inductee with earnings of $1.6 million, first made the NCHA Amateur Futurity finals in 1990. She’s been a Non-Pro finalist seven times since, taking the reserve championship in 2008 on Lannies Freckles.
