Zachary Bahm, 27, of Stillwater, Oklahoma, marked 218.5 to win the Rios of Mercedes Amateur Classic Challenge, presented by Bar RR Ranches Wednesday at the NCHA Summer Spectacular, presented by Great American Insurance.
Sadye Simpson of Nemo, Texas, and Colton Smith of Geary, Oklahoma, shared the reserve championship at 217.
Bahm rode Metallic N Blu, a 5-year-old Metallic Cat x Haidas Little Lass mare bred by Donald and Jane Wolf. Bahm had placed in the NCHA Super Stakes Classic Amateur and Unlimited Amateur, and the Arbuckle Mountain Unlimited Amateur earlier this year.
Bahm, who was reserve champion of the 2014 NCHA Suer Stakes Amateur finals on Cat Duallin Doll, was notching up his first win in historic Will Rogers Coliseum.
Co-reserve champion Sadye Simpson rode Metallic Little Cat, a 5-year-old Metallic Cat x Seca Rey Lena mare bred by Dr. David Hartman. Simpson won both the Amateur and $25,000 Amateur finals with Metallic Little Cat at last year’s Pacific Coast Derby.
Co-reserve champion Colton Smith rode Lil Pep N Time is a 6-year-old One Time Pepto x Shortys Lil Pep mare bred by Matthews Cutting Horses. Smith was reserve champion at the Cattlemen’s Classic and was third at the Breeders Invitational with the mare earlier this year.
