Kyle Manion of Aubrey, Texas, and Steven Feiner of Aspen, Colorado, both marked 221 Monday for the high score of the first day of Non-Pro competition at the Lucas Oil NCHA Super Stakes Classic in Fort Worth.
Madalyn Colgrove of Boligee, Alabama, and Ken Schultz of Sacramento, California shared the next highest score at 219.
Manion rode A Smooth Dually, a 5-year-old Smooth As A Cat gelding bred by Tommy Manion, Inc. out of Dually San Lena, by Dual Pep. Kyle Manion was a Non-Pro finalist on A Smooth Dually at the NCHA Futurity, Derby and Super Stakes, and he won the Non-Pro Gelding division of the NCHA Derby with him. A Smooth Dually has earned more than $89,000.
Manion is a two-time reserve champion of the Non-Pro Super Stakes Classic.
Feiner, who won the Non-Pro Super Stakes Classic back-to-back in the last two years with Lil Rattler, was on a full sister to that mare Monday. Button Down Supercat was bred by Cross Timbers Cutting Horses by Dual Rey out of NCHA Futurity champion Highbrow Supercat.
Feiner has been a Non-Pro finalist on Button Down Supercat at the Pacific Coast Derby and the Brazos Bash, and a Limited Non-Pro finalist at the NCHA Futurity. Trainer Wesley Galyean was second at the Breeders Invitational and third at the NCHA Derby on the mare, and won the Bonanza Classic on her this spring. Button Down Supercat has earned more than $137,000.
In the Limited Non-Pro division, Brandon Westfall of Los Olivos, California, topped the first day with a 218.5 on Johnny Royal. The 5-year-old gelding was bred by Frank and Belinda Vandersloot, by CD Royal out of Sues Best Bet, a daughter of World Champion Meradas Little Sue.
Westfall, 15, was reserve champion of the Non-Pro Pacific Coast Derby and was an NCHA Derby Limited Non-Pro finalist on Johnny Royal.
