Smooth As A Cat was the leading sire of the 2015 NCHA Futurity with offspring earnings of $504,314, the largest share from all purses. Metallic Cat, sire of 2015 NCHA Futurity Open champion Stevie Rey Von, ranked second to Smooth As A Cat with offspring earnings of $493,388. Smooth As A Cat, sire of Open reserve champion Bet Shes Smooth, accounted for five of the 24 Open Finalists, more than any other stallion.
Smooth As A Cat is also sire of 2014 NCHA Futurity Open reserve champion and NCHA Open Horse of the Year Smooth Talkin Style, as well as 2010 NCHA Open Horse of the Year LHR Smooth Jamie May.
Metallic Cat was the leading sire of the 2015 NCHA Futurity Sales, where 96 of his offspring brought a total $3,303,400. High Brow Cat with $1,850,700; Dual Rey with $1,550,400; and Smooth As A Cat with $1,088,000 were the only other stallions to command total sales of one million dollars of more.
At auction, Metallic Cat’s two-year-old daughter Melting Snow commanded $280,000, the highest price paid from all 2015 NCHA Futurity Sales, while Smooth As A Cat daughter Zee Im Smooth, at $225,000, was the high-selling yearling, as well as the second highest selling horse from all sales. In 2014, Smooth As A Cat son Tappin A Cold Brew also topped the NCHA Futurity Yearling Sale, at $225,000, while A Smooth Satin Doll, by Smooth As A Cat, was the 2013 high-selling yearling.
Smooth As A Cat and Metallic Cat continued their dominance in the recently concluded Abilene Spectacular, which stands as a bellwether for cutting’s 2016 major events.
