NCHA Horse of the Year Junie Wood and John Mitchell marked 225 to lead the second round of the Open Classic Challenge at the NCHA Summer Cutting Spectacular in Fort Worth on Monday.
Their cumulative 444 also gave them the lead after the first two rounds, by half a point over Some Kinda Highbrow, ridden by Austin Shepard.
Junie Wood, owned by Glade Knight’s Slate River Ranch, was bred by Craig Crumpler by Nitas Wood out of Tuffs Junie, by Tuff Lena. Crumpler won the 2013 NCHA Non-Pro Futurity on her, where Knight bought her and launched her on her Horse of the Year campaign. The 5-year-old mare has won eight major events and has earned more than $381,000. She placed third with a 221.5 in Sunday’s Western Bloodstock NCHA Showdown in Cowtown, earning $26,000.
