Metallika, shown by Tag Rice, captured the Breeders Invitational Open championship and $61,939 with a 225-point performance on Saturday, May 24 in Tulsa, Okla. RW Rockin and Lloyd Cox claimed reserve with 224 points, while Autumn Kitty, also under Cox, and Sannman, shown by Beau Galyean, tied for third with 221 points.
Meanwhile Stop Toying With Me and Dean Holden won the Non-Pro championship with 223 points; Meteles Cat and Cody Hedlund took reserve with 222 points.
Metallika, sired by Metallic Cat and owned by Scotty Rice, had been off the radar since January, when he and Rice placed 12th in the Abilene Spectacular Open and fifth in the novice division of the event.
RW Rockin, however, was already an eight-time major event finalist with earnings of $78,166, before she arrived in Tulsa.
Sired by Dual Rey, owned by Monty Johnson, Amarillo, Tex., and bred by Walton’s Rocking W Ranch, RW Rockin is out of NCHA Horse of the Year and prolific producer Boon San Kitty LTE $498,188.
In addition to RW Rockin and Autumn Kitty, Lloyd Cox also tied for ninth place on Stylin Sweetie, owned by John McClaren. Altogether, Cox earned $72,293 on three mounts in the Derby Open Finals.
Non-Pro champion Stop Toying With Me is by Dual Smart Rey, sire of 2013 NCHA Futurity champion and 2014 Abilene Spectacular champion Dual Smart Kitty, who tied for seventh with 219 points in the Breeders Invitational Open with Clay Johnson.
Dean Holden and Stop Toying With Me LTE $136,434 were Open and Non-Pro finalists (4th Non-Pro and 10th Open) in the NCHA Futurity and also placed in the NCHA Non-Pro Super Stakes.
Meteles Cat, trained by Rock Hedlund, was reserve champion of the 2014 NCHA Super Stakes Non-Pro with Cody Hedlund, Rock’s son, who also showed the Metallic Cat son as an NCHA Futurity Non-Pro Finalist (24th).
Megan Miller placed third with 219.5 points in the Non-Pro Finals aboard Booreylicious, by Halreycious, bred and trained by Megan’s husband, Matt Miller. Matt won the 2006 NCHA Futurity Non-Pro championship riding Booreylicious’ dam, Travs Scooter, who carried both Matt and Megan for $221,560 in official NCHA earnings.
