Low-profile go-round contender Cattalou switched to high gear for a 226-point championship win in the Breeders Invitational Open Classic Challenge on May 12, in Tulsa, Okla. Shown by Beau Galyean, the 5-year-old son of High Brow Cat topped a 24-horse finals. JJS Catless Merada, under Michael Cooper, claimed reserve with 224.5 points; Swiss Cat Pepto and Clint Allen placed third with 221.5 points.
Five-year-old Cattalou, also champion of the 2014 Arbuckle Mountain Classic Challenge, collected $26,036 for the Breeders Invitational win, which increased his official career earnings to $149,558. A full brother to Louellas Cat LTE $264,537, and half-brother to Movin Downtown LTE $334,523, Cattalou is owned by Curtis Chester, Weatherford, Tex.
JJS Catless Merada, by Cats Merada, came into the finals with the high cumulative go-round score of 444 points (223/221), with 435.5 points as the cutoff for qualification. Cattalou qualified with 436 points; third-placed Swiss Cat Pepto with 440 points.
Owned by Rose Valley Ranch, Weatherford, Tex., 5-year-old JJS Catless Merada won the 2014 Abilene Spectacular Classic under Cooper, and also placed eighth in the 2014 NCHA Super Stakes Classic. His Breeders Invitational earnings bring his career total to $97,703.
Swiss Cat Pepto, a 5-year-old daughter of Sweet Lil Pepto, is owned by Jeff and Margaret McCoy, Weatherford, Tex. Margaret McCoy showed her to third place in the 2014 Bonanza Amateur Classic, while the McCoy’s daughter, Shannon, rode the mare as reserve amateur champion of the 2014 NCHA Super Stakes Classic. Swiss Cat Pepto has career earnings of $99,544.
Clint Allen was the leading rider of the Breeders Invitational Open Classic Challenge with a total of $31,390 earned on four mounts: Swiss Cat Pepto (3rd for $16,028); Starz N Boon (8th/tie for $6,523); Blu Ray (12th for $5,838); and Shesa Dirty Martini (24th/tie for $3,000). Starz N Boon, Blu Ray, and Shesa Dirty Martini are all owned by David and Stacie McDavid, Fort Worth, Tex.
