Lucchese Cogdell of Tulia, Texas, marked 221 on her 8-year-old gelding Bentley Boon to win the Senior Youth title at the 6666 Ranch NCHA Western National Championships in Denver on Saturday. Derek Waters finished second with a 217.5 on Sassy N Smooth.
Bentley Boon was bred by Kenneth Rodgers by Peptoboonsmal, out of $99,00-earner and $661,000-proucer Sheyssmatlittlelena, by Smart Little Lena. Sheyssmatlittlelena is also the dam of MillionHeir champ Redneck Yachtclub ($517,000). With earnings of $79,000, the gelding had a successful limited age career with Alvin Fults and Beau Galyean before Lucchese got him.
She has been a finalist with Bentley Boon at the West Texas Futurity, Brazos Bash and the Grace Ranch NYCHA World Finals.
Reserve champion Derek Waters of Macksville, Kansas, showed his 8-year-old Smooth As A Cat mare Sassy N Smooth. The mare was bred by Gene Cunningham out of Sammie Jo Lena. Derek won the Kansas Classic on her two years ago.
Junior Youth
Regan Plendl of Kingsley, Iowa, marked 219 to win the Junior Youth finals. She rode Rey Nounce, a 9-year-old son of Dual Rey bred by Double Dove Ranch. Rey Nounce, an earner of $106,000, is out of Peek A Boon, whose offspring have earned $574,000, including Play Peek A Boon ($205,000).
Regan, who marked the second high score of 217 in the go-round (behind Payton Paul’s 218 on Badger Poo), drew first in the finals for the winning run.
Stephanie Croft’s 216.5 on Frosted Feathers nailed down the reserve championship. Frosted Feathers is an 8-year-old Cats Red Feather mare out of CJ Little Rachel.
