Winston Hansma’s championship win aboard Bossy Brother in the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Limited Open Finals, on Thursday, September 3, gave him a rare place in the annals of cowhorse history. Hansma, an NCHA Hall of Fame Rider and winner of the NCHA Open Futurity on CD Olena in 1994, is only the second rider to ever win the NCHA Futurity and an open championship at the Snaffle Bit Futurity. Tom Lyons won the 1973 NCHA Futurity and the 1980 Snaffle Bit Futurity on Doc’s Marmoset and Docs Baroque, respectively.
Bossy Brother, by CD Lights, was bred and is owned by Hansma and Danny Motes out of Diamond Sparklette. Motes and Hansma also bred CD Lights (by CD Olena), shown by Hansma as 2006 NCHA World Champion Stallion and a leading NCHA and NRCHA sire, with over $2 million in offspring earnings. In the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Limited Finals, Bossy Brother competed against a field of 10, which included two other CD Lights offspring – Shine The Lights, third under Austin Johnson, and CD Jackson, 10th with Clinton Anderson.
While Motes was at the Snaffle Bit Futurity to cheer Bossy Brother and Hansma to a win, she learned that another horse that she raised, CD Starbucks, by CD Olena, trained and ridden by her son, Ryan Motes, was named named AQHA/PRCA Heeling Horse of the Year.
The 2013 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity continues through Saturday, October 5, in Reno, Nev.
