Dont Look Twice and One Time Choice both marked 228 to share the honors in the Open finals of the Mercuria NCHA World Series of Cutting at the Idaho Futurity Sunday.
For Dont Look Twice and trainer Phil Rapp, it was the third year in a row they have won the Mercuria event in Idaho. Overall, it was the eighth World Series win for the mare, who is the sport’s leading active money earner. Bred by Rapp, and owned by Louis and Corliss Baldwin’s Waco Bend Ranch, Dont Look Twice has earned over $750,000, and she is a World Champion and Horse of the Year. She is by High Brow Cat out of Tapt Twice.
One Time Choice is a 6-year-old mare bred by Walt and Lou Anna Burdette by One Time Pepto out of Hickory Choice. She is owned by the Jaeggi family’s J Five Horse Ranch and trained by Chubby Turner.
“Last night’s run (in the go-round) was just picture perfect,” said Rapp, who topped the qualifiers with a 230. “That was one of the best runs I’ve ever had.
“Tonight, my second cow was as good a cow as I’ve ever cut. She was a phenomenal cow.
“I’m very pleased to tie with Chubby. He’s in a hauling race to be World Champion and he’s done a great job with his mare. I’m proud for Chubby and proud for the Jaeggis and Mercuria and what they do.”
One Time Choice is a late bloomer that Turner showed in the Novice World Finals last year, and she went on to place fifth in the Augusta Classic in one of her few aged event appearances.
“This mare has only been in training for two and a half years,” Turner said. “She was just green and she didn’t show till the last month of her four-year-old year. There was a lot of talent there, and we just gave her a long time.
“She’s setting second in the (Open) standings right now and this win got us a lot closer. She’s a pretty cool horse.”
