Buzzted, winner of the Semi-Finals with 220 points, and an Open Gelding finalist, scored 225 points Saturday to claim the NCHA Open Derby championship.
The Light N Lena-sired gelding, who earned $45,500 for the win under Sean Flynn, is owned by Tim May, Saltillo, Miss. May had previously won nearly $30,000 showing Buzzted as a non-pro.
Flynn also placed tenth on Cha Ching And Change, sired by Im Countin Checks and owned by Circle Y Ranch, Millsap, Tex. Flynn’s Open Derby mounts earned an estimated $64,977.
This was the first NCHA Derby win for Flynn, who won the 2012 NCHA Super Stakes Classic with Cat Man Blue.
Kevin Murray, Mission Hills, Kan., scored 221 points for the Non-Pro championship aboard Travelin Smooth. Murray and his Smooth As A Cat-sired gelding also won the Derby Limited Non-Pro championship on Friday, and qualified for three additional finals. Their total show tally came to $35,461.
